The role of the Orthotist/Prosthetist is to asses, measure, design, fabricate and fit medical supportive devices. Monitor and educate the patients regarding the care and use of the appropriate orthosis/prosthesis

What is Orthotics? Orthosis = brace, an external device used to correct or modify the structure and function of the neuromuscular and skeletal system. (Ortho lit. ‘to straighten, to align’)

Functions of Orthoses: Prevent, correct and/or maintain deformities. Correct instability by restricting movement in any given direction. Relieves weight bearing. Provide easier movement or reduce pain

What is Prosthetics? Prostheses = Artificial limb, an artificial device intended to restore the functions of the missing body part as normal as possible which may be lost through trauma, disease, or a condition present at birth
